In Key Stage 1, we are excited to be using the new Power Maths scheme. The children will use different resources and manipulatives to gain a deeper understanding and breadth of knowledge in each maths topic which will develop their Mastery skills.
In year one we will be using a variety of fiction texts, including Six Dinner Sid, The Gruffalo, Peter and the Wolf and The Tiger Who Came To Tea. We will use these books as a springboard into non-fiction writing. Through looking at these books, the children will be able to work on: capital letters, full stops, adjectives, retelling stories, speech bubbles, 'I' with a capital letter and getting lots of great ideas for when we do our own writing.
Children are reminded and encouraged to change their reading book on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure that you are reading with your child daily. If your child has finished their book please continue to read books that you have at home or practise their phonic sounds with them.
In science, we will be looking at ourselves, seasons, being a scientist, materials, plants and animals. We always love to promote outside learning and using our scientific skills of observation and questioning.
Show and Tell
As we mentioned in our Parents in Partnership meeting Show and Tell is something that happens on a Friday. Please encourage your child to only bring in things on this day. We would also like to suggest that the children tell you why their item is special before they bring it in so that you can encourage them to bring in things which will promote good classroom discussions.
Things which would be great for Show and Tell include:
Computing: Keyboard skills, data handling, Beebots, word banks and editing stories, E-safety email and digital pictures.
DT: Moving picture cards, breakfasts and fruit kebabs and animal masks.
Geography: Our school, China, weather, maps, continents, names and capital cities of the UK.
